Just got word in that the Democrats seem to have overcome their so-called Blue Dog problem at least long enough to vote down any chance of stripping the “public option” from the Democrat sponsored Obamacare version of healthcare “reform” currently roiling the House of Reps.

U.S. Rep. Doctor Mike Burgess (R, Texas) tried to introduce an amendment that would strip the House bill of the public option. Burgess worries about the regressive price controls and rationing as well as the pressure that the public option would put on the medical and insurance industries that would, in the end, force millions of Americans to lose their current medical care plans — something President Obama keeps falsely claiming won’t happen.

So, as so many have said, don’t put your faith in the Blue Dogs to save us. They are still Democrats, after all.

UN Putting Education in Government’s Hands and the End of Homeschooling

Homeschooling is a growing trend in the United States today. Many thousands of parents wary of government indoctrination of their children, not to mention tired of the plummeting level of actual education threatening our kid’s futures, are taking their children’s education into their own hands and setting up homeschools. The trend is also starting to alarm the bureaucrats in government that count on using our children as a device to bring in state and federal tax money as well as teachers unions that relish the power of controlling our progeny. Consequently, state governments are increasingly looking at regulations meant to hamper homeschooling efforts.

But it isn’t just American bureaucrats and unions looking to justify their jobs that homeschoolers should worry about. From outside the U.S. there is a looming threat to homeschooling. Not only education sits in the crosshairs but the very the rights of parents to decide what is best for their own children could be threatened. This threat will likely manifest itself if the U.S. ratifies the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Currently the U.S. is not a signatory to this treaty and it would be better for parents if that remains the case because the UNCRC, if ratified, could set the stage for a complete government takeover of all education regardless of the desires or religious convictions of parents throughout the United States. And as mentioned this treaty also has the potential to eliminate parent’s rights altogether and, not just with education. Current events in Great Britain, a signatory to the treaty, are being closely watched by American homeschoolers and evidence seems to be mounting that worries about the UNCRC are well founded.

Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis (R, Wyoming) has written an important piece illuminating five of the most important points about the House Democrat’s healthcare bill. In her piece headlined Five Things You Need to Know About the House Democrats’ Health Care Bill, Lummis gives us some actual facts about some of the more insidious Democrat tax hikes, rationing plans, and regulations in the bill.

This is must reading for anyone interested in knowing what Democrats have in store for all of us.

A Government Run by Mrs. Kravitz

If you are a Baby Boomer you, no doubt, remember the television series Bewitched, starring Elizabeth Montgomery. Ms. Montgomery played Samantha Stevens, a witch who was married to a mortal and who lived in a quintessential American suburb. One of the regular characters – and one of the funnier characters – was a neighbor of the Stevens’, Gladys Kravitz, played by Alice Pearce and then Sandra Gould. An incredibly nosey neighbor, Gladys Kravitz was always just moments away from being able to prove to her husband, Abner, that “something very strange is going on over at the Stevens’ house.” Gladys Kravitz was the model busybody and, if she were alive and real today, she would, no doubt, be a member of the 111th Congress.

Gladys Kravitz knew everything and nothing at all, all at the same time. Her advice was most always wrong and her opinion was most always uninformed but this didn’t mean that she ever gave thought to not offering both to anyone and everyone with whom she came in contact. Mrs. Kravitz, as Samantha always called her, believed that she was always right, even without knowing all the facts or understanding all the issues. That she existed was enough reason for her input to be solicited and Lord help you if you didn’t act on her advice in an expeditious manner! Just ask Abner!

As I remember the character I can’t help but think that we have a factionalist gaggle of Mrs. Kravitzs currently running our government. Then, in deference to Ms. Pearce, Ms. Gould and the writers of Bewitched, I reconsidered…the gaggle now in control of the US government is much worse. The 111th Congress can only be described as being run by a minority of know-it-alls who insist they know what’s best for you, for me, for our entire country without any practical experience to support their arrogance and without any understanding of reality to sustain their bloated sense of elitist superiority.

What if the DMV Gave You Your Healthcare?

Here is a more thoughtful video on why Obamacare is bad for us all. Most of the videos we get are the flashy, soundbyte type, but this one is just one fellow having a conversation with us on why Obamacare is such a disaster economically and will curtail our freedom. It was put out by the Acton Institute.

Of course, one of the worst aspect of this policy, like most Big Government policies, is that Obamacare treats you like a child not smart enough to make your own decisions. But another problem is that once we get this mess in place it will be nearly impossible to get rid of it once we all realize what a mess it is. You know the old saying, there’s nothing so immortal as a government program.

So, you are a car racing reporter and you have a big story about the news that BMW has pulled out of the Formula 1 race scene. So, what better way to start off your report by saying that BMW is the “Sarah Palin” of F1 racing?

Revealing a complete lack of understanding of politics and Palin’s situation, sports writer Dan Neil has decided that BMW is “just like” Sarah Palin ostensibly because it quit the race scene in a piece headlined “BMW quits Formula 1. It is now the Sarah Palin of F1 and the future of KERS.”

Another Unelected Obama ‘Committee’ to Control Healthcare Costs

Franklin Roosevelt thought controlling prices of things would right the depressed economy. Today, more economists every day are admitting that his efforts caused The Great Depression to last at least five years longer than it needed to. In the 70s Richard Nixon thought that his program of price controls would save the economy. Instead, it wrecked it further. And now, in 2009, as the Obama administration contemplates a massive government takeover of the nation’s healthcare system — nearly 20% of our national economy — at the top of the list of things to do is to set up effective price controls on services.

In fact, Medicare already does this and it has been the sort of mandates and government meddling that has helped lead to the downfall of our medical system as it is. Right now, Medicare pays only some 40% of the actual costs of medical care forcing one of several situations. Doctors that end up not getting paid, patients on the hook for what is left, or hospitals that never get reimbursed for services causing them to try and charge higher prices to everyone else to make up the difference. And, of course, the low reimbursement rates that Medicare pays out has an effect on the high cost of insurance, as well.

But what will come once Obamacare is passed will far exceed the mess that the price fixing via Medicare has wrought. Worse, there will be no effective way for the people to have a say in what sort of prices that government forces on the industry because Obama plans to create another one of his ubiquitous “committees” with a mandate to set these price controls, fees and schedules.

Brit Patients Don’t Complain Because Nothing Can be Done

Ever get a speeding ticket? Have you looked at that ticket in your hand and for a brief second imagined that you’d go right down there to that court and dispute it? But, then you realize that there is simply nothing you can do. No judge or police officer will care what really happened. You realize that government won’t do a thing for you. So, you sigh and just send in a payment.

Now take that feeling of helplessness, that surety that government is a faceless, impersonal and uncaring beast and realize that it will be that cold monster giving you your healthcare if Obama gets his way. The Brits have already realized this and that is why almost one in three national healthcare patients that have problems with their service don’t bother to complain to government. After all, it’s government and there is nothing anyone can really do to help.

Destructive Social Justice

The Democrat/Socialist Party’s plan to nationalize healthcare exemplifies the essence of social justice: an invidious urge to destroy what exists and a faith that social harmony depends upon making everyone equally miserable.

Liberal-progressives estimate that 46 million people, 15% of the population, lack health insurance. In order to provide them insurance, liberal-progressives intend to force each of us to forgo any vestige of individuality and to accept a prison-like regimentation of our healthcare.

When Hillary Clinton was working in 1993 to impose socialized medicine upon us, the Washington Monthly, one of the purest strains of socialism within the liberal-progressive, mainstream media, editorialized forthrightly that a fundamental aim and benefit of Hillary Care would be forcing business leaders to sit for hours in crowded doctors’ waiting rooms to receive medical care. There is more than a bit of nastiness in this liberal-progressive urge to smash what others have built and to drag people down to their level.

Every Day Is A Bad Hair Day When You Send The Wrong Signals

While the rest of the fashion world is buzzing about US First Lady Michelle Obama’s new up do that took her from a Laura Petrie wannabe into the Victoria Beckham top not crowd, a bizarre little news story about a disturbing trend in British headwear has largely gone unnoticed. Yet the implications of the article are far reaching and an ultimate threat to the authority of police women in all Western countries.

So let’s visit the seemingly obliging police force of Avon and Somerset in England to see how the secularist state’s mania for political correctness has come up with an uncalled for catering to Islamic “sensitivity” concerning community relations. In a move that only those in love with subservient dhimmitude status can dream of, non-Muslim police women in Avon and Somerset now are issued with headscarves to wear when they enter local mosques on police business. There are somber black scarves for police uniforms and blue ones for Police Community Support Officers.

Naturally, Muslims were delighted to be consulted especially since modern Islamic headscarves are a sign of political resistance to Western culture and not a religious requirement although politically minded Muslim women within the UK’s police and medical establishments already clamored for and got uniform style hijabs accepted for their professions. No matter what the sex of the wearer, when you strip away a part of a police officer’s uniform, you symbolically strip away the power and the authority of the office. It’s the same reason why security guards’ uniforms so closely resemble police uniforms; there is power inherent in the outfit. Police uniforms are a visible sign of authority, which carries not only the full support and approval of the state, but also the compliance and respect of the citizenry.

Should a 7-Day-Long Job be Counted as a ‘Job Created’ by Stimulus?

Some state governments are playing fast and loose with the stats to “prove” that stimulus money is going to “new jobs” by counting temporary jobs that lasted for as little as seven days as a “new job” credited to the stimulus.

Who cannot agree that counting a temporary job that lasted a mere seven days to the “jobs created” column is a farce? A seven-day -long job is meaningless to job stability and job creation. A seven-day-long job adds nothing long term and barely anything short term to the economy or the nation and is built on a false assumption that the money wasted by government has “done something” for the economy. It is but a shady accounting practice meant to cover Washington’s rear end and nothing more.

In truth, this stimulus money has done nothing but expand government as it is used to fund government programs. It has not stimulated anything but government.

Liberal: Make the Fat People Pay for Everyone’s Healthcare

A July 25 L.A. Times blog piece is a perfect example of the anti-liberty left that I have talked about previously, those who would dictate from government on high how we are to lead our lives in order to deserve the government healthcare that we all pay our taxes to provide “for free” to everyone. For the Times, Melissa Healy is positing that we should tax fat people to pay for Obamacare because of the “obesity epidemic” that is driving up medical costs.

So, if Healy had her way, we’d have the government telling us what we are allowed to eat in order to deserve healthcare. Of course, I am sure that this rather fascistic health nut would also tell you with a serious face that healthcare is a “right,” too. So, how might she reconcile the “right” to healthcare to a fascistic controlling of people’s lives in order to deserve the benefit of that healthcare? She has probably never even thought of the question, sadly.

So let me delineate the liberal dilemma.

Defining the Problem(s) is the Crux of the National Broadband Plan

FCC Broadband Coordinator Blair Levin described the crux of the National Broadband Plan in testifying before the Commission 7-02 as “identifying where there are currently ‘demonstrable public interest harms.’” That central task is essentially defining the problem(s) and is necessary to complete the last task of the plan: “identifying ways to lessen those public interest harms,” or recommending solutions. Defining the problem largely defines the range of recommended solutions.

The plural use of “harms” here suggests that the Plan could end up “identifying” more problems than the obvious core problem prompting the Plan — that not “all people of the United States have access to broadband capability.”

Levin’s choice of a classic organizational structure, background-problem-solution, is a wise, useful and simplifying approach for such an exceedingly complex endeavor.

All government intervention in the economy distorts decision making, with bad and unanticipated results.

Classical economics, on the whole, attempts to explain how individuals behave under changing economic conditions. The implicit idea is that people, acting as individuals, collectively move an economy. But classical economics recognizes that within an economy, many different economic factors impinge upon individuals who have highly variegated economic preferences. Free market prices, changing continually in response to the changing balance of supply and demand across markets for tens of thousands of different kinds of products and services, are the signals that trigger individuals’ economic decisions.

Keynesian macroeconomics, in contrast, assumes that the economy is comprised of monolithic abstractions treated as if they were independent, controllable “things.” Among others, those “things” are consumption, savings, investment, wages, and employment. The implicit assumption is that everybody can be controlled by one-size-fits-all policies. Thus divorced from the multitude of individual aspects of real life, Keynesian economists believe that their computer models can with precision predict consumption, investment, and wages, enabling them to maintain full employment at all times.

Doctor Zero’s prognosis, ” Nobody knows the Left’s game plan better than Sarah Palin, and it seems like she plans to use what she has learned”:

Palin can do a lot of good by highlighting the thuggish tactics of the Left, which were all on nauseating display in the campaign to destroy her. Deranged conspiracy theories, in her case about the maternity of her son? Check. Blinding hypocrisy and manufactured “crises” pushed by political operatives masquerading as “journalists?” Absolutely. Vicious misogyny, passed along with nary a raised eyebrow from “feminists?” You betcha. Invasions of privacy and abuses of government to destroy a political target? Ten-four.

The good doctor is right. Using Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals as its strategic guide, the Left has smeared Sarah Palin with abandon, and it has not been held accountable so far:

The Media’s Constant Palin Hyperbole

A recent CBS report by Scott Conroy and director of political coverage Steve Chaggaris is typical of the hyperbole to which the Old Media is prone when “reporting” (by that you can read dramatizing) Sarah Palin’s political doings.

This report is not as chock full of it as some others that have utilized over-the-top phrases and rhetoric to beat down Palin, but there are a few here that ring typical of the sort of backdoor slams that the Old Media constantly over use in its Palin coverage.

We start with the opening line:

SEIUs Healthcare Pact With Wal-Mart Annoys AFL-CIO

Wal-Mart is making unions mad… again. But this time it is for joining forces with one as opposed to merely opposing them. Wal-Mart has recently joined forces with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) to help them push through the disastrous Obamacare policies that the SEIU is championing.

While the SEIU is one of the largest, most powerful unions in the country, not all unions are happy with the labor group’s teaming up with the retail giant.

“We’re not too happy with Wal-Mart. We don’t think they should be an example of how to fix the health-care problems in America,” AFL-CIO President James Hoffa, Jr. told reporters.

As it happens, I agree with Hoffa that Wal-Mart’s agreement with the SEIU makes it an imperfect example by which to push healthcare “reform.” You see, Wal-Mart is not pursuing what would be a good policy for the country. It is pursuing what would be a good policy for Wal-Mart and a bad one for Wal-Mart’s competition.
