EXCLUSIVE: Last night I spoke to William J. Kelly and he assures me that he is staying in this race to the end and WILL be on the primary ballot in his race for State Comptroller. Kelly was adamant that he is in it to win despite the “vicious campaign” that he feels has been waged against him — most recently in early November when the rumor of his abandoning the race was bandied about.
“We’re on the February 2nd ballot and we’re in this race to win,” Kelly told me. “We’re going to give the people of Illinois one helluva campaign – a campaign to reform state government and redefine and rebuild the Republican party in the process.”
Kelly went on to discuss some of the dirty tricks that he’s identified as being employed against him.
“My two primary opponents have engaged in a vicious campaign already that – among other things – have been telling people I’m not on the ballot or that I’m going to withdrawal. Obviously, December 3 is the last day to withdrawal and we have no intention of doing so – far from it. One of my opponents has even gone so far as to secure endorsements by deceiving people and telling them I’m withdrawing from the race even though he knows it isn’t true. The politics of deception – that has no place in the Republican party or the Illinois conservative movement.”
Some have speculated that with three comptroller candidates in the GOP primary, Kelly, Jim Dodge, and Judy Baar Topinka, Kelly and Dodge will cancel each other out leaving Topinka with the 40% she’ll need to take the nomination. In fact, Kelly claims that this is the reason Dodge is in the race in the first place, to give Topinka the nod. But Kelly is confident that his campaign is gaining steam and he’s sure he will eclipse both Topinka and Dodge in the primary.
“…in the face of these things, our campaign is gaining momentum. People are discovering my history of anti-tax activism on behalf of families and small business and they know that I’m for real. That makes me extremely confident in our team and our message and that is how we will win: by being real conservatives from the heart. We will not only stand up for our conservative principles but we will also show that conservatives are people that real people – from construction workers and housewives to policemen and college students – can relate to and root for. And that is something that I am very proud of.”
On November 11 Kelly criticized candidate Jim Dodge for his campaign donations to Orland Park Democrat Dan McLaughlin (up to $2,300). Kelly points to all of this as proof that he is the only true conservative in the race. For information of Kelly’s campaign see his campaign website at www.friendsofwilliamjkelly.com.
