Union Thugs at Capitol Demand Illinois Gov’t ‘Raise Our Taxes’

In the late morning hours of April 21 dozens of rented buses streamed into Springfield, the Illinois capitol, and began spewing out hundreds of tax-gorged union thugs. It was as if the Illinois Hog Producers association had pulled up to the capitol and thrown wide the doors to their livestock carriers.

Some estimates say the unionists mounted some 15,000 participants all there to wave their professionally printed signs and wear their gang colors… er, I mean wearing their T-Shirts bearing their union’s signature colors.

And what did they want? They wanted the Illinois legislature to raise taxes on everyone in the state so that those few union members could get even more undeserved bennies, richer pay scales and even higher pensions than anyone in the private sector could ever expect — all things they already enjoy.

But, a protest is all American, right? These guys are just like the tea partiers, aren’t they?

Not so much.

Chicago Radio: the Laughing Stock of the Midwest

Welcome to Chicago Con the Air!

What the heck is going on with Chicago’s AM radio stations? For some ungodly reason… and I DO mean ungodly… convicts are turning up all over the place as radio hosts. No, I mean real convicts. Not just your average car-jacker or B&E guy, I mean political convicts. It’s no wonder Chicago is the laughing stock of the country. The city is so crooked that crooked politicians even infest the radio, fer cripes sakes!

Just announced by WVON a Monday morning radio show will be hosted by convicted Cicero Mayor Betty Loren-Maltese. Maltese just got out of jail for misappropriation of city funds.

As Chicago Radio maven Larz notes, “It should be noted that the man Betty Loren-Maltese is filling in for, Cliff Kelley, is himself a disgraced former politician.”

Policing for Profit – The Abuse of Civil Asset Forfeiture

April 22, 2010 | Filed Under Congress, Constitution, Crime, Democrats/Leftists, FBI, Government, Government, Corruption, Liberals, Police, Security/Safety, Warner Todd Huston, Western Civilization | 1 Comment

A group called the Institute for Justice (http://www.ij.org/) is doing yeoman’s work alerting everyone to the simply un-American powers that police agencies across the country have been afforded by an out-of-control government. Police agencies have been given ever increasing stormtrooper-like powers to steal your property and assets because they merely suspect you might have gotten it by illegal means. All across the country, from your local Barney Fife’s all the way to your favorite G-Men, police agencies are stealing private property with no trial, no jury, even no actual charges filed in many cases.

The IJ has published a great and ominous report on the abuse of forfeiture laws that is a must read.

Now, the germ of this theft is located in the RICOH-styled laws that were created to materially punish drug dealers outside of the result of long court battles. The initial idea was that drug dealers would be financially devastated as soon as they were apprehended. Cars, homes, money, investments, all summarily taken by what ever policing agency was fortunate enough to hit the jackpot by arresting a drug dealer.

Certainly few people have any sympathy for drug dealers and so, with little protest by voters, these sorts of forfeiture laws spread across the land very quickly. But like anything and everything government does, evil quickly follows the good idea. Road to hell, and all.

Could it be? Could Scott Lee Cohen be roaring back to politics so soon after being thrown off the Democrat ticket in disgrace?

I don’t know about you, but this blogger is crossing his fingers and toes in hopes that it could be true. Oh, LORDY make it true. I mean, why not, eh? What fun it would be.

For those that don’t quite remember the dim days so long ago last February, Scott Lee Cohen won the Democrat primary to take the Lt. Gov. spot on the Dem. Ticket. But no sooner was he celebrating his big win when the Chicago Old Media finally started to research candidate Cohen only to discover that he had all sorts of unsavory legal and criminal allegations in his past. There was the beating he gave his prostitute girlfriend, the assault with a knife… well, let’s just say that things were a bit messy in his recent past. Once the Dems found out about his past the whole Democrat establishment rose up to demand that Cohen quit his campaign for Lt. Gov.

Well, as he headed for the door Cohen promised that he’d try for office again someday. Apparently, he’s considering that someday should be today. Several sources are reporting that Cohen would like to run for Governor as an independent this year.

AP Pushes Muslims Into Story Where They Don’t Belong

April 22, 2010 | Filed Under Associated Press, Democrats/Leftists, Islam, Islamofascism, Lobbyists, Religion, Terrorism, War on Terror, Warner Todd Huston, Western Civilization | Comments Off

The AP recently posted one of its many daily short news stories, reports usually of only three or four paragraphs in length, this one about the possible Nazi connotations of a vanity license plate issued by the Virginia Dept. of Motor Vehicles. But at the last second, this report suddenly became a propaganda tool for the radical Islamist group CAIR.

As it happens, the Virginia DMV revoked a vanity plate issued in 2009 with “14CV88″ embossed upon it. Supposedly the numbers “88″ and “14″ are connected to Hitler in some way or another, but what makes the AP report appalling is the last line in the AP report.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations applauded the DMV’s action.

Um, why did the AP feel it necessary to add that CAIR was happy that the Nazi influenced vanity plate was pulled? What do Muslims have to do with opposing anti-Jewish sentiment? In fact, isn’t it rather the opposite more often than not? More outrageously, Islamism was an offshoot of Nazism as Hitler’s Nazi system served as the model for radical Islam as practiced today. Yet the AP is allowing radical Islamists to claim the mantle of anti-racists?

Brit Union Strike Over Severance Pay Might Soon Hit in U.S.

A few weeks ago several British civil service unions launched a two-day strike over cuts in severance pay that the government authorized for workers that were let go because of reductions in the government work force (called a “redundancy cut”).

The cap in “redundancy pay,” said British government unions, could see workers losing a third of their “entitlement.”

Government officials said that the new pay scheme could save the government £500 million. Starting in April “anyone earning £30,000 or less will be entitled to a maximum of three years’ pay or £60,000, whichever is lower.”

Are the Church Abuse Cases Problems of Homosexuality?

April 22, 2010 | Filed Under Children, Family, Gays, Government, Corruption, Selwyn Duke | Comments Off

-By Selwyn Duke

Contradiction is no stranger to the mainstream media, and it is on full display in their treatment of Catholic-priest sexual abuse story. Normally, the media take pains to point out that transgressors should not be used to typify the group with which they’re associated. For instance, when terrorism is covered, we’re told that the jihadists of the world constitute just a small group of “extremists” and do not represent Islam. That is, when the media can’t manage to identify such people only as “youths” and must actually address the issue in the first place. Yet, with the Church matter, they have no problem blaming the Church as a whole, tarnishing the reputations of the institution, Catholics in general and all priests through gratuitous, slanted coverage.

But there is one group in this story that not only isn’t painted with a broad brush, it’s whited out: homosexuals. Claim that the abuse was homosexual in nature and you’ll hear accusations of intolerance, bigotry and backwardness. “Don’t be ignorant,” say the apologists, “Haven’t you heard about psychology and the ‘determination’ that homosexuality and pedophilia are completely different things?” Well, I will ask if they’ve heard about word definitions.

In the ongoing Blago-a-go-go, the sage of the Governor whose aborted attempts to sell a U.S. Senate seat for money, profit and high falutin’ job opportunities for himself and his family, we see ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich taking a little time out from his busy radio and TV star schedule to visit the court rooms of the Richard J. Daley building in beautiful downtown Chicago.

Blago has been yelling from the rooftops that the prosecution should “play all the tapes” to prove that he, Blago, is innocent as the driven snow. Today Judge James B. Zagel (Reagan appointee, 1987) shot down Blago’s demands and said that he is the one that will determine what tapes will be played and what won’t.

“I will not allow the time of these jurors to be needlessly consumed,” Zagel said. Zagel also scolded Blago saying he would not allow any “legal head butts” to take place in his courtroom.

Unsafe Sharia Healthcare Coming Your Way, America

Recently the British health services ruled that Muslim nurses and doctors didn’t have to wash their hands before handling patients. Why did they reverse a hundred years of sanitary medical practices? Why, because the Brits didn’t want to upset their Muslim citizens who think that washing themselves is some sort of crime against their religion. What else could it be, eh?

Instead of washing their hands between patients, the Department of Health ruled that Muslim health workers could use disposable arm-length plastic gloves to treat patients. Naturally, these gloves can easily spread germs if not disposed of between patients and the danger of such an unsafe practice was acknowledged by officials. But not offending Muslims was far more important to British officials than health safety.

A Department of Health spokesman said: “The guidance is intended to provide direction to services in how they can balance infection control measures with cultural beliefs without compromising patient safety.”

Balance infection control with “cultural beliefs”? Either you are stopping the spread of infections or you are observing cultural beliefs. As a health professional you can’t do both unless those cultural beliefs take back seat to practicing safe and effective medicine!

Steve Malanga of City journal has a great piece detailing how California’s public employee unions are destroying that once great state.

Malanga starts by repeating the ominous warning to the politicos at the state capitol in Sacramento made by a Service Employees International Union chief. “We helped to get you into office and we got a good memory” the official said on to California’s pols. “Come November, if you don’t back our program, we’ll get you out of office.”

To me this is reminiscent of the warning by the old Soviet Union’s Nikita Kruchev who said that “we will bury you.” Only, the SEIU has far more power to bury our governments than the old Soviets had!

Librarians Having Sex at Work… and Who Cares, Anyway?

April 21, 2010 | Filed Under Books, Morals/Sex, Warner Todd Huston, Western Civilization | Comments Off

-By Warner Todd Huston

UPI published a quickie on librarians getting their Dewey Decimals dotted at work the other day. The story centered on a survey of librarians that was conducted in the 1990s out of which the saucy stories of sex among the stacks came to light.

The survey was full of all sort of salacious details about the sex lives of librarians at work. And after reading it one can only ask, “who cares”?

Seriously. Why should anyone care that librarians would pose nude for money, would like to have condom dispensers at work, or like to get their shelves rearranged at work?

Sometimes information like this really is not only meaningless, but useless.

Why is it that every aspect of life has to be turned into some sexual outlet as far as the Old Media is concerned?

Star Parker v. Radical, Ethically Challenged Maxine Waters Acolyte in California 37

The November 2010 elections are shaping up to be  memorable for residents of California as top Republicans target key districts. Minority leader John Boehner hopes to unseat Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House while Chuck Devore actively campaigns for Senator Barbara Boxer’s seat.

America’s eagerness to vote out corrupt politicians has opened the field for candidates who understand the issues and  promise to resist the lure of the DC power structure.

In California’s 37th Congressional District race that candidate is Conservative leader Star Parker.

Parker “is the founder and president of CURE, the Center for Urban Renewal & Education, a 501(c)3 non-profit think tank that provides a national voice of reason on issues of race and poverty in the media, inner city neighborhoods, and public policy.”

Denying Reality Brings Us Closer to Nuclear Midnight

There has been quite a bit of talk about nuclear terrorism as of late, thanks to the pseudo-summit hosted by President Obama regarding nuclear non-proliferation and the policing of weapons of mass destruction and nuclear weapons elements. I say pseudo-summit because although there was an “agreement” reached by each of the 47 countries in attendance, it was not binding and should not be misconstrued as any type of treaty. Still, shining the spotlight on unsecured nuclear material currently accessible by the black market is an important thing to do and in that respect I tip my hat to President Obama for his effort.

During the summit, President Obama stated:

“The single biggest threat to US security would be the possibility of a terrorist organization obtaining a nuclear weapon. This is something that could change the security landscape around the world for years to come.”

Indeed, the thought of a terrorist produced nuclear event in an American city – or any major world city, for that matter – is nothing short of bone-chilling. Truth be told, a nuclear event in Manhattan would present a trophy for al Qaeda, Hezbollah or any number of militant radical Islamist terror groups , that would last generations. It is for this reason that Mr. Obama initiated the summit in the first place; to assure that terrorist organizations never attain nuclear capability.

As the kids on them Internet tubes say, it was an epic fail. GOP Gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady held what was claimed to be a “blogger coffee” in a restaurant in Rosemont on April 17. Three whole bloggers showed, one of which is closely connected behind the scenes to GOP movers and shakers. In other words this was not a “bloggers” anything, but just another closely controlled Brady campaign event facade that amounted to nothing.

In attendance to “meet” Brady was Bill Baar of Bill Baar’s West Side, Fran Eaton of the heavily connected Illinois Review, and a writer for NBC Chicago’s The Ward Room Blog.

As the Ward Room notes,”there wasn’t any coffee, and there were only three bloggers.”

Coffee Break Costs Cook County $76,291

April 20, 2010 | Filed Under Budget, Chicago, Cook County, Cook County Board, Democrats/Leftists, Government, Government, Corruption, Taxes, Warner Todd Huston | Comments Off

-By Warner Todd Huston

A cuppa Joe, we all love it — well, I don’t drink coffee at all, but most people do, anyway. You might spend a few bucks a day on your coffee, right? Well, add a few more dollars to that daily bill if you are a resident of Cook County, Illinois. A recent review of the county’s expenditures shows that it spent $76,291 on coffee products from the ACE Coffee vending company.

But, it wasn’t just coffee and snacks that the ACE company provided. No, it was one hand washing the other as the ACE Coffee company has given tens of thousands of dollars in political contributions to Cook County Democrats, 14th Ward Alderman and Democrat Committeeman Ed Burke in particular. Burke and his various committees and associates got $20,250 of ACE’s $30,000 in political contributions made last year.

  • $11,250 to Friends of Edward M. Burke
  • $3,000 to The Burnham Committee (of which Burke is listed as chairman)
  • $3,000 to the Democratic Party of the 14th Ward (of which Burke is committeeman)
  • The company’s CEO, Bernard E. Cavitt, also made $10,500 in contributions to Burke-related committees since 2000.

If a private company wants to buy coffee for its employees, well, that is fine. They have a right to decide how to spend their own profits. But what we have here is the taxpayers paying for county employees to sit around drinking coffee and eating snacks on OUR dime. And the coffee company is hip deep in the pockets of county and city officials to boot!

We can thank Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica for his efforts to make sure that the Cook County check register is on line for all to see so that this sort of unsavory relationships can see the light of day. We’d never be able to find such things without the Cook County transparency effort, so thanks to Peraica for his work here.

Those Delusional ‘Coffee Party’ Lefties

The self-delusional world in which liberals wallow truly is amazing. It takes an Olympic gymnast’s level of agility to warp your logic enough to think like one of them and a recent report on the left-wing blather site Newsvine is yet one more example of the backbreaking contortions that liberals must indulge to make themselves feel better.

In this post on the presumed falling numbers of the tea party protests and an amusing subsequent praise of the coffee party effort, this left-winger calling himself “MoeZilla” desperately tried to massage the truth in order to make his losing left appear as if they are holding their own in the American political debate. The truth is, of course, that our pal Moe warped reality in multiple ways in order to make it seem as if his side is winning — or at least is treading water — while the tea party is losing.

He began his “report” saying that organizers for a tea party protest in Stockton, California were “hoping for 1,000 people to join the protest,” but only about 250 showed up (according to ABC News 10). MoeZilla segues on to reveal that the tea party event in Sacramento “was only around 2,000.” Moe estimates that the April 15 protest was an 80% drop from last year’s tea party protest.

Why Can’t Old Media Get History Right Part 2: Boston Herald Muffs Rev War

April 20, 2010 | Filed Under Britain, Democrats/Leftists, Government, Corruption, Liberals, Media, Media Bias, Newspapers, Revolutionary War, Warner Todd Huston | 1 Comment

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last week I posted a deconstruction of the muffed WWII history as penned by NPR commentator Cokie Roberts. Today I have another example of muddled history in the Old Media. This one is misconstrued Revolutionary War history as published by the Boston Herald. Hard to believe that the Boston Herald, a paper that sits in the cradle of the Revolutionary War, can get Revolutionary War history wrong but such is the degraded state of the Old Media.

In Lexington, Massachusetts on April 19, 2010, reenactors of the Rev War celebrated the 235th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington. The Boston Herald reported on the event later that morning and made a mash of its allusions to history.

Re-enactors took to Lexington Green today to recreate the opening moments of the Revolutionary War in front of a crowd of thousands, who gathered for the early-morning ritual.

…The battle that produced the “shot heard ’round the world” was the result of a confrontation between Lexington militia men and British “red coats” on Lexington Green, which escalated into a daylong fight involving 3,500 militia men and 1,500 red coats.

Notice that the Herald called the battle at Lexington between Patriot militiamen and the British Red Coats as the one that, “produced the ‘shot heard ’round the world.’” As any first year history student knows, however, the battle that is identified as the one that produced the “shot heard ’round the world” was the Battle at Concord, not the Battle of Lexington.

The phrase comes from the famous poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote the lines for the 1836 unveiling of the Obelisk erected in Concord, Massachusetts commemorating the Battle of Lexington and Concord.

Rush Limbaugh has been criticized for raising the issue of whether or not Haitians will be subjected to the same kinds of limitations on assistance to be imposed on Americans such as the proposed healthcare review boards popularly referred to as “death panels” because of the powers these regulatory bodies would be granted to deny life-saving treatment to those deemed of marginal socioeconomic utility by government bureaucrats.

Why isn’t this question raised by the broadcaster considered a valid concern?

If the first purpose of the United States government is to provide for the general welfare of its citizens however one might decide to define the scope of that notion, shouldn’t foreigners irrespective of the desperation of their circumstances be subject to at least the same rigors?

Rahm Emanuel: ‘I Would Like to Run for Mayor of Chicago’

On PBS’ Charlie Rose show, Rahm Emanuel finally admitted what has been rumored in hushed voices throughout the city of Chicago: He wants to run for Mayor.

Emanuel told host Rose that if Mayor Daley decides not to run again, he would like to throw his own hat in the ring and run for the big seat at City Hall.

But if Mayor Daley doesn’t, one day I would like to run for mayor of the City of Chicago. That’s always been an aspiration of mine even when I was in the House of Representatives.

Now the pressure is on Mayor Daley to decide if he wants another term and to wonder if Emanuel will run against him despite his claim to want to support Da Mayor if he runs again.

The diminutive, oft times profane Emanuel reiterated a few times that he’s not looking to knock Richard Daley out of the office, but one really does have to wonder. Few Presidential Chiefs of Staff last long and one can be pretty sure that Emanuel will be gone for that position sooner rather than later. So, is he really, really sure that he won’t run to beat Daley?

This is a question that Daley would be foolish not to be asking himself.

Ill. State Senate Prez’ Son in DUI Driving State Owned Vehicle

April 19, 2010 | Filed Under Chicago, Democrats/Leftists, Government, Government, Corruption, Illinois, Illinois State Government, Senate, State Government, Warner Todd Huston | Comments Off

-By Warner Todd Huston

The son of Illinois State Senate President John Cullerton (D, 6th District) was arrested for drunk driving over the weekend. He had a blood alcohol level of .188, twice the legal limit of .08.

The vehicle that son Garritt was driving was a state owned SUV that is supposedly only to be used for official state business.

Cullerton immediately told reporters that he didn’t know his son was diving around in a state owned vehicle.

“A Senate vehicle assigned to the Senate President for official legislative business was used by his son without his authorization,” Sen. Cullerton’s office said in a written statement. “The Senate President is dissapointed that this incident occurred and takes this matter very seriously. He will work to ensure that this does not occur in the future.”

What utter BS.

You expect anyone to believe, Senator Cullerton, that your son stole the SUV to joy ride in after boozing it up? You truly mean to tell us, Senator Cullerton, that your son is a drunk AND a thief at the same time?

No, Mr. Cullerton, what is far more likely is that your son got caught drunk driving — bad enough of course — but that he was driving the state-owned vehicle because you let him do it all the time and it wasn’t out of the ordinary at all.

Yet, here you are throwing your own son under the bus… or SUV as the case may be… just so people won’t realize that your family has been illegally using state-owned vehicles for their own personal needs.

Mr. Cullerton you are not only a crook, but a bad father. Shame on you.

Kerry Picket of the Washington Times found two amusing videos of California Senator Barbara Boxer, one in 2009 and one from this month, that shows the sad state of affairs in which Democrats find themselves politically these days.

In 2009, Boxer was warning about those dangerous “well dressed” angry mobs that make up the tea party movement. She was scornful of those horrible people who would dare protest the government in general, and she and the Obammessiah in particular. It was just un-American, donctcha know?

Yet by April of 2010 Boxer, who is locked in the first close election she’s ever had, is suddenly urging her supporters to be just as excited as the tea partiers.
