‘Three Cups of Tea’ Author Commits Suicide

Not long after the book Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace … One School at a Time came out in 2006 it became a best-selling sensation, but now the co-author of the book, beset by questions over whether or not the stories in the book are true, has committed suicide.
On November 14, Three Cups co-author David Oliver Relin, 49, was found dead outside Portland along some railroad tracks and under a roadway overpass. According to Multnomah County medical examiner Peter Bellant, the writer died from a “blunt force head injury.”
Relin co-authored the famed book with adventurer Greg Mortenson who was said to have made a vow to help build schools for girls in remote Pakistani villages because one small village took him in and nursed him back to health after he got lost trying to climb the world’s second highest mountain in the Karakoram range of the Kashmir-administered area of northern Pakistan.
By the early 2000s, Mortenson had joined the lecture circuit to promote his adventures and to raise funds for the Pakistani schools project. Journalist David Relin was assigned the task of writing a book on Mortenson’s cause and met the adventurer on the lecture trail in 2005 to interview him for the book project.
Their relationship was said to have been tense. Regardless, Three Cups of Tea became a huge success selling over four million copies.

Flashback: Candy Crowley Dismissed Oppression of Women By Taliban

With the focus on the horrible job of “moderating” perpetrated by CNN’s Candy Crowley at the latest 2012 presidential debate, it is instructive to take a look back at some of her past work for CNN. For instance, in a 2010 interview with former President George W. Bush, Crowley dismissed Bush’s correct assertion that women are horribly oppressed by the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
It is interesting to contrast Crowley’s dismissive attitude about the Taliban’s oppression of women with the story of 14-year-old Malala Yousufazi, the Pakistani teen who stood up to the oppressive Taliban and was shot in the head for her bravery. This story is heartbreaking but let us hope that her example can spur others to activism against the evils of radical Islam.
But, it seemed in her interview with President Bush that Crowley didn’t think the oppression of women by the Taliban was any worse than that of any other nation!
(At 1:50 into the video)
George W. Bush:: I would say that, uh, put yourself in the position of a young girl in Afghanistan and realize that her life will be incredibly brutalized and or thwarted by people like the Taliban. And the fundamental question – Is it worth it? – that’s the question we’ve got to ask. Does it matter to our own national security, or does it matter to our conscience, that women will be mistreated? I argue it does. And I understand it’s difficult…
Candy Crowley: It is. And women are mistreated in a lot of different parts of the world.
Bush: But nothing like they were during the Taliban.
Notice that Crowley felt it necessary to point out that women are mistreated “in a lot of different parts of the world”? That equivocation really had no bearing on the discussion of the oppression by the Taliban, certainly, but what was she trying to say, here? The impression is that the oppression women face at the hands of the Taliban is no big deal because women are mistreated elsewhere, too.

Rick Santorum: Obama Is a Terrorist Appeaser

We haven’t talked much about Rick Santorum here on the blog — actually, few people have so we aren’t too different in that, unfortunately — but he had a nice little spot on CNN in an exchange with Candy Crowley on whether or not Obama is an appeaser of foreign terrorists and tyrants.
Obama, of course, has been portraying himself as the ultimate anti-terrorist because he “got” Osamma bin Ladden, not to mention how he has severely damaged al Qaeda. But is that all there is to his record? Does that make him the perfect anti-terrorist? Santorum says no.
Rick is exactly right, here. Killing a few terrorists is not necessarily being tough on either terror or the dictators that push terror as a tool of the state….

Why Democracy Is Dangerous for the ‘Arab Spring’

There is a concerted movement that began in earnest with the Progressive Era to identify the United States of America as a Democracy. To be sure, this movement has made great strides in convincing the American citizenry of just that. This movement has been so successful in delivering this message that Democrats, Republicans, Liberals and Conservatives have, throughout history – and even up to and including today, have identified our American form of government as that of being a Democracy. There is even an initiative promoted by our federal government to export “Democracy” throughout the world. Today we see this initiative playing out in the Middle East and North Africa. There is only one thing wrong with all of the above and the problem exists at the root: The United States of America is not a Democracy; it never has been and, God willing, it never will be.
Democracy has always, throughout history, served as a gateway to despotism. This is primarily because Democracy is tantamount to “mob rule,” or government by the majority. In a government ruled by the will of the majority – a Democracy, the rights of the minority are not guaranteed and are often neglected or even ignored by those who hold power, most often in pursuit of keeping or maintaining that power.
Additionally, in a Democracy, because it is essentially government by the will of the majority, government has no constraints. If fifty-one percent of the people – or a plurality of the people – can be persuaded to believe a particular avenue of thinking; convinced that a certain law is “necessary,” it becomes the policy of the government or the law of the land, regardless of whether or not the minority’s rights have been usurped or protected.

The Consequence of US Leadership Failure at the UN

From the office of Rep. Peter Roskam (Ill., 6th District)…
In the coming weeks the United Nations Security Council is expected to take a series of misguided procedural steps towards allowing the Palestinian Authority (PA) to unilaterally declare independence (UDI). If they happen they will mark a step backwards from any potentially genuine Middle East peace and illustrate yet another failure of the Obama Administration’s “leading from behind” approach.
This did not have to be a foregone conclusion. This past May, Majority Leader Eric Cantor and I called on the Administration to stand united with the American people, and with Israel, opposing this UN action. The State Department has heard a similar chorus in the months since.

Death from the skies seems to be Obama’s biggest foreign policy achievement. Since becoming president, Obama has greatly stepped up the use of predator drones and other military ops to kill top al Qaeda officials. He’s killed dozens of them — along with much “collateral damage” in bystanders — with his drone strikes that have taken out nearly the entire top tier of al Qaeda’s and even some of the Taliban’s leadership. But there is a vexing question about this successful campaign to assassinate these terrorists: the anti-war left is wholly silent about it all.
With today’s news of the end to two top al Qaeda operatives, Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan, ABC News published a list of those terrorists Obama has gacked with his death from the skies campaign. These senior al Qaeda officials tally to some 20 terrorists killed. Most have been with predator drone strikes…

A problem with which American administrations have grappled since the days of Thomas Jefferson’s presidency has been Arabs and the Middle East. The Marine anthem mentions “the shores of Tripoli” because, in 1801, Jefferson sent them to there to put down the Barbary pirates.
One of the best books on this subject is “Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East, 1776 to the Present” by Michael B. Oren who, with exquisite irony, is currently serving as the Israeli ambassador to the United States, the nation of his birth.
Regarding the Middle East, if you have had the feeling that the Obama administration has been spectacularly inept as it takes its turn at bat, you’re right. Barely six months into his first year, on June 4, 2009, the newly-minted President gave a speech in Cairo.

Here are 5 of the most often asked questions of 2011 that by virtue of the answers given by Presidents, Pundits and Prophets can also be included in the list of the 5 most absurd answers of 2011, or perhaps of all time. Can we correct some of these answers?
1. Does the Arab Spring praised by Barack Obama mean the Muslims will now peacefully come into the 21st century with the rest of the world?
The first way to answer this question is to consider that both Osama Bin Laden and President Obama have praised the Muslim Spring. If it doesn’t warm the cockles of your heart to know that the world’s most infamous terrorist and the world’s most radical, socialist and controversial U.S. President in American history firmly agree on something; then what could.

After the brutal shooting death of Pakistan’s Christian Minister Shabbaz Bhatti for his opposition to ‘blasphemy laws’ the persecution and murders of Christians continues unabated in Pakistan and other Muslim countries. Is this what the west is supposed to tolerate?
Even that lumbering and largely ineffective body known has the UN has voiced its concerns over the brutality and torture by Muslims on young boys in Afghanistan. There, they are sexually molested and severely punished with electric shock and beatings. Is this what we are supposed to tolerate?
In Egypt Christians are being slaughtered and Coptic Churches are being burned to the ground. As the rest of the world watches and President Barack Obama plans to send billions in aide to Egypt, no one seems to mention these human rights violations in the mainstream media. Little wonder that Sarah Palin coined the phrase the ‘lamestream media.” Is this what we are supposed to tolerate?

We are hearing a great deal about a budding “Democracy movement” spreading throughout the Middle East. Many are calling it an “Arab Spring.” The belief is that after centuries of totalitarian oppression, the Arab street is suddenly pining for more freedom; rebelling against the elitist ruling class of kings, emirs, despots and tyrants. This is most likely true for a great number of those filling the streets of Egypt, Syria, Tunisia, Bahrain and myriad other Middle Eastern, predominantly Muslim nations. But there is a less than honorable component amongst the rebellion that simply waits for the “right” to a democratic vote. Contrary to how the idea of a move to Democracy presents, in the volatile Middle East there are elements in play that could make it a move in the wrong direction.
Each and every day we hear the misnomer that the United States of America is a Democracy. We hear it from the average man on the street, the mainstream media and even from those we have elected to office. But the fact of the matter is this: we are not a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic. A thorough and convincing exhibit of the facts surrounding this reality is presented in Notes on Democracy: And the Republic for Which It Stands. The fact that this issue is even in need of address is a scathing commentary on the constitutional illiteracy of the American electorate and serves as a sobering reminder that, often times, what sounds good – what “feels good” – isn’t always as it presents.
The distinction – between the benefits of a Democracy and a Constitutional Republic – is incredibly important, and while some describe our nation as a Democracy in an error of ignorance, others – some with schemes of political opportunism – do so with a nefarious purpose and bad intentions.

Kind of tells you what a person is made of if they hold a pity party in regards to how Bin Ladin was mistreated during his elimination. The person raising these concerns is the very same extreme Reconstructionist that any other time thinks Glenn Beck should be executed as a “false prophet” along with Sabbath violators.
Borrowing from the advocates of infantacide, if you don’t want to see Bin Ladin’s death photos, DON’T LOOK AT THEM!
Bin Laden was given 40 minute funeral ceremony. That’s more of a warning than the victims of 9/11 got.
If Bin Ladin was worthy of an Islamic funeral at the expense of the U.S. Navy, why weren’t his minions slain at the compound also worthy of such and left to rot in the Third World sun?

… and Why Liberals are Our Weak Spot
-By Warner Todd Huston
For the online, left-wing magazine Slate, William Saletan thinks he’s found something that will damage Osama bin Ladden’s reputation in the Islamic world. But what he thinks is such a big deal proves that he doesn’t understand radical Islam or even the Muslim world. Worse, it proves why liberals are our soft spot and why they could be the death of us.
Saletan is all excited over the fact that the U.S. found a large cache of pornography in bin Ladden’s living quarters. This, Saleton is happy to say, will undermine bin Ladden’s reputation as a strictly holy man. This hurts bin Ladden, says Saleton, because, “they’re more upset by porn and hiding behind women than by suicide bombing”
Saleton contends that in our fight against bin Ladden, we’ve found the right “argument” to level against our opponent.
Why is porn such a big idea?

Even Pakistanis do not believe that their political and military leaders did not know bin Laden was living, as one columnist put it, “wrapped in the bosom of the Pakistani security establishment.”
Cyril Almeida, writing in the Pakistani newspaper, Dawn, a few days after the killing of bin Laden noted that, when the question is asked privately, “No one will say anything but, yes, they knew he was there.”
For 34 of its 64 years, Pakistan has been run by generals whose military intelligence presumably works in league with its Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI), though both have their own agendas. It is unlikely that much civilian control over either exists.
Almeida wrote, “If we didn’t know, we are a failed state; if we did know, we are a rogue state. But does anyone believe they didn’t know?”

Ron Paul, the GOP’s cranky old uncle, has been spouting his isolationist, appeaser-styled foreign policy ideas for decades but with this bin Ladden business he has again gone too far. Now Ron Paul says we should never have killed Osama bin Ladden.
Ron Paul says he would not have authorized the mission that led to the death of Osama bin Laden, and that President Barack Obama should have worked with the Pakistani government instead of authorizing a raid.
As to if he would have given the go-ahead to kill OBL, Paul said:
“I don’t think it was necessary, no. It absolutely was not necessary,” Paul said during his Tuesday comments. “I think respect for the rule of law and world law and international law. What if he’d been in a hotel in London? We wanted to keep it secret, so would we have sent the airplane, you know the helicopters into London, because they were afraid the information would get out?”
So, moRon Paul would go to our avowed enemies and ask them if pretty, pretty please will they help us capture the guy they love and have been hiding from us for more than a decade.

I apologize for that, but there was no help for it as I was unable to post much during last week. Today will be for the several bin Ladden posts I couldn’t get posted.)
Osama bin Laden is dead, killed at the hands of the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG), commonly known as “DEVGRU” and informally by its former name, SEAL Team Six To be certain, justice has been served where Osama bin Laden is concerned. The murderer of the victims of September 11, 2001 – and myriad other innocent victims and military personnel – will stand in judgment for his actions, now answerable to a much higher authority. Make no mistake; this is a good thing, a very good thing. But it is a singular “thing” – a singular component in a much larger and more serious issue.
Pres. Obama took to the airwaves on May 2nd, shortly before midnight, and declared,
“Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaida, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children… at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.”

Color me happy. For the first time in over 10 years, crowds of Americans are waving flags and singing the Star Spangled Banner, celebrating an American victory – the death of bin Laden. Who’d a thunk? Just when I felt progressives had succeeded in turning America into a self-loathing, guilt ridden, multicultural sycophant to world opinion, I see hope that maybe our nation will be able to retain the pride in our accomplishments that has been under assault for so long. How about those Navy Seals?!!
I’m happy because it appears our military and intelligence agencies haven’t yet succumbed to political correctness and bureaucratic meddling. Instead of agonizing about Muslim sensitivities, they decided to take the kill shot and finally meted out justice to the man responsible for the deaths of thousands on 9/11. I’m smiling.
I’m so happy that I don’t even mind Obama taking credit for the operation that resulted in bin Laden’s death. I’m glad that I was wrong in my opinion that Obama would never willingly appear to offend any portion of the Muslim population. Obama’s statement, “Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan,” isn’t even offensive. Finally, he took a stand. Granted, it was a no brainer, but at least he appeared, for a moment, to be presidential. Finally.

Americans greeted news of Osama bin Laden’s death with a celebration of the payback it represents for the deaths of nearly 3,000 Americans on September 11, 2001.
As former Vice President Dick Cheney said on hearing the news, “Today, the message our forces have sent is clear—if you attack the United States, we will find you and bring you to justice.”
This is part of the American psyche. A great power cannot allow itself to be attacked and harmed without rendering retribution. Every day bin Laden drew breath after 9/11 was a rebuke to America.

Bin Ladin is supposedly dead. A million plus terrorists to go.
The death of Bin Ladin ends the war on terrorism the same way the capture of Saddam ended war in Iraq.
Now that Bin Ladin is supposedly dead, expect Qaddaffi to attempt to regain his crown as king of all terrorists.

The particular operation that finally got this murderous monster, Osamma bin Ladden, has been ongoing for four years. It started at the end of Bush’s term in office. It has finished with dedication under President Barack Obama.
Barack Obama was perfectly correct to send his Seal Team from Afghanistan and to avoid telling the Pakistani government that this operation was in the offing. Barack Obama deserves great credit for not bowing to Muslim entireties in Pakistan to keep them fully informed about our operations.
After all, the reason the hunt for bin Ladden has taken this long is not because Clinton or Bush were failures, but because every single time we told the Pakistani government that we were close to bin Ladden, the Pakistanis informed bin Ladden that we were on his tail and allowed him to get away.
The Pakistanis cannot be trusted in any way. Period. Obama was quite right to realize this.

There are very few times when we should celebrate the death of a human being. Serial killers and child rapists certainly qualify as ones whose deaths we might feel disposed to celebrate without much fear of moral qualms. Terrorist Osama bin Ladden is another one.
When tyrants fall it is always a good thing. Muamar Gaddhafi, Ida Amin, Castro, Che Guevara, Nicolae Ceaușescu, when monsters like this have finally been removed from this earth we are all better off. Though he did not lead a nation, Osama bin Ladden was, indeed, a tyrant.
Late on May 1, 2011, President Barack Obama gave the world the best news. Osama bin Ladden has been killed by American Special Forces near Islamabad, Pakistan.
Like the coward he is, he used a woman to hide behind as he tried to run away from American forces. He couldn’t even go out like a man.
Osama bin Ladden’s ideology is not dead, however. His ideals are still out there pushing to enslave the world. Radical Islam has not been cowed. This murderous, inhuman disease of a belief system is still alive and well, if wounded.
Spit upon bin Ladden, nay he rot forever in hell. But don’t imagine we have won this war against Islam.
Lastly, let us remember here that the intel that led to this wonderful outcome came from terrorists held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This is important to remember. It is important to understand that the leftists that have wanted that facility closed would have seriously hampered this great victory over al Qaeda.

Obama’s Disastrous Visit to India

President Barack Obama’s now concluding trip to India seems to have turned out to be a failed or at the very least unhelpful effort. His false starts, unhelpful comments and bad policy moves mark this visit as a bit of a mess.
Obama made multiple gaffes not only for India but for his own party back home not to mention his nation. As his political party was delivered a severe blow and his agenda was cut off at the knees on election day he was seen dancing happily all across the continent with a lavish visit paid for at the taxpayer’s expense even as those same taxpayers were enraged at wild government spending sprees. As the Indians worried over Obama’s foreign policy he refused to call the those that attacked them in Mumbai terrorists and finally on his exit from the country he delivered yet another one of his digs at his own country saying that America is a nation in decline.
Things began going wrong for The One even as he first arrived in one of the most vibrant nations on earth. For one thing he arrived a lesser president than when he originally set up the trip. His party was delivered a stunning and historic blow as the GOP picked up over 60 seats in the federal seat of power and hundreds more in the state legislatures in the Nov. 2 election, a feat that hasn’t been repeated since WWII. So Obama arrived with his mandate splintered and his power diminished. He is a president with less power to help his Indian hosts do anything.

Faisal Shahzad was sentenced to life in prison on October 6th for trying to kill a lot of innocent Americans in Times Square on May 1, 2010. He was completely unrepentant and we need to understand the funhouse-mirror mentality of Muslims who believe that Allah, through the Koran, has granted them, not just the right, but the duty to kill infidels who offer any defense against their outrages.
There is no question that the U.S. has had to be active militarily in the Middle East ever since the former Iraq dictator, Saddam Hussein, invaded Kuwait on President George H.W. Bush’s watch.
The former director of the CIA, ambassador to China, and then leader of the free world understood that, if no action was taken, Saddam would be into Saudi Arabia next. Saddam had previously spent eight fruitless years in a war with Iran. It is one of history’s ironies that his son, George W. Bush was president on September 11, 2001 when the homeland was attacked by Muslim terrorists.

In Washington D.C. on Sept. 12 I attended the star studded premiere of the new film America at Risk: The War With No Name, featuring Newt and Callista Gingrich and a dozen well respected experts on the subject of the War on Terror. The event was held at the Newseum, a block or so from the National Mall.
America At Risk clearly reveals the dangers that radical Islam still presents to American security and safety. We are still at war with radical Islam and it is a war we are at best treading water on and at worst actually losing. The biggest problem, according to the film, is our current president. Obama refuses even to recognize that we are at war and is constantly undermining our past efforts and leaving us open for future attack.
In fact, the movie makes a strong case that the U.S.A. doesn’t even have a serious global strategy to fight radical Islam and that the only reason we haven’t had a new major attack is because we’ve been lucky more than we’ve been good at preventing them. The film says that it isn’t a matter of “if” we get hit again, but when.

Terrorists the world over are laughing into their turbans and praising Allah five times a day for the naive Americans who were responsible for electing Barack Hussein Obama as president of the U.S. And they’re giving a special thanks to the American media, specifically, the Washington Post, for giving them all the information they need to target the security agencies created in response to 9-11.
bin Laden is laughing because America’s political and media elites are doing his job for him. The Washington Post just gave bin Laden all the intelligence he needs to effectively counter any remaining efforts to combat Islamic terrorism.

I do not know what it is about Islam and liberalism that causes both to turn logic and truth on its head, but we have been witnessing it in different ways in recent days.
First there was the “humanitarian” flotilla running the Israeli blockade of Gaza and then there was the appalling anti-Semitism of Helen Thomas, formerly of the front row in the White House press room.
Suffice it to say that the so-called Palestinians are not living in a state of “occupation.” They have repeatedly been offered a state of their own, but have refused it for some six decades. They exist as wards of the United Nations.
Israel is a sovereign nation and has been since May 16, 1948. Its ancient sovereignty dates back to the days of David and Solomon. I say “so-called” because Palestine was the name applied to Israel by a Roman emperor in an effort to make the world forget that Jews had been living in their own land for over a thousand years before being driven into exile.

The Washington Think Tank New America Foundation has been reporting on drone strikes in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq for quite some time and its tally of kills by U.S. drones reveals an interesting thing. It shows that drone kills under President Obama are far and away higher than those under Bush.
Reliable numbers of those killed by U.S. drones are obviously hard to come by. Strikes are deep in unfriendly territory and subject to obfuscation by both a U.S. government that isn’t too keen on reporting kills as well as its enemies that try to downplay the strikes in order to discredit their effectiveness. Because of this the NAF reports a range between which the truth may lie.
For instance, in these first few months of 2010 NAF reports that so far between 141 and 240 people have been killed by U.S. predator drones. This includes “collateral damage” as well as the deaths of actual terrorists.
