Hollywood has realized something, it appears, at least on a certain level. Wild eyed, Anti-American "activists" like Danny Glover do not sell movies. I just saw a very interesting TV commercial advertising a new DVD release of the 1990 film "Predator 2" starring Danny Glover in the lead role which just might confirm my claim.
I won't bother describing the movie as it was eminently forgettable and quite beside the point of this Op Ed. But what piqued my interest in this commercial is that Glover does not appear on it but for a split second yet he is the star of the movie. Is that not amazing? A commercial advertising a movie without selling the star, without even showing him as being in the thing?
So, why do you think that this actor does not appear on the TV commercial for this new DVD release? Could it be that the advertisers realize that having this man on their advertisements would do nothing toward selling the thing? Could it be that they realize that selling movies is the goal not alienating customers? Could they imagine that the biggest audiences for action movies are those people who live in the "red" states and who would not appreciate Glover's type of hate speak?
It is amazing that Hollywood advertisement executives might try to distance themselves from this actor so let's review some of the things Glover has said and see if there might be cause for their severe caution:
Princeton University, Nov. 2001-
"The death penalty is inhumane ... whether that person is in a (jail) or it's bin Laden."
And at the same appearance:
"One of the main purveyors of violence in this world has been this country, whether it's been against Nicaragua or wherever ..."
Interview with a Brazilian Magazine ("Into E") -
"Yes, he's racist. We all knew that but the world is only finding it out now. As Texas's governor, Bush led a penitentiary system that executed more people than all the other U.S. states together. And most of the people who died from (the) death penalty were Afro-Americans or Hispanics ... (Bush) promoted a conservative program, designed to eliminate everything Americans had accomplished so far in matters of race and equality."
Washington Post-
"This is much larger than me. It's larger than my comments, and my signing a letter supporting Cuba's right to self-determination. People can take that in whatever way they can. ... They will use the war and they will use my signing a letter as a pretext for their attacks."
And these are just a few examples. There are many more to be sure. His denunciations of this country, especially when he has been abroad, are quite outrageous. He has been quoted over and over denigrating the USA, it's citizens, leaders, history and character.
So, perhaps Hollywood IS right, for a change. Would YOU buy a movie that would benefit the career of such a man as actor Danny Glover? I don't think I will be.
