Book
Seven
In book seven we are treated to the budding romance between the Nite Owl
and the Silk Spectre. Up to this point, Nite Owl is the only character
that even comes close to being "normal" in this series and even
he is a bumbling, unsure person in company of others. Here we see he has
even more trouble than we imagined. He fails to perform sexually when
he and Silk Spectre first get together. So much for "normal."
During the love scene, or lack of love as the case may be, on the television
that is playing in the background it is announced that the Russians are threatening Pakistan. It is also announced that the writer of the pirate comic book is missing. Then a company
called the "Institute For Extraspatial Studies" reports that
it may be close to opening portals to other dimensions. These three points
intertwine in the plot later.
The book ends as Silk Spectre and Nite Owl go out and save some apartment dwellers
from a burning building, quite violating the law that outlaws super-heroes.
The pair end up successfully making love in the afterglow of their excitement and lawbreaking as they float in the Owl's airship after the rescue.
"Did the costumes make it good?," Spectre asks afterwards.
"Yeah, I guess the costumes had something to do with it. It just
feels strange, you know? To come out and admit that to somebody. To come
out of the closet," says Nite Owl.
I don't imagine this has to be further illuminated to catch the drift
there. We can launch into half a dozen "Freudian" directions
with that little exchange.
